This is a historic inbred line (IBL) from the roots of modern cannabis breeding—Purest Indica, also known as the Steve Murphy Afghan. These seeds were reproduced from a 1983-era seed stock that originated with Seattle Greg, who received them in 1979 from author Murphy Stevens. This variety served as the foundational parent for what would become the Northern Lights family—specifically, the early NL #1 through NL #5 lines.
Origin and Provenance
The Purest Indica was never sent to Holland or distributed widely. According to Seattle Greg, he intentionally withheld these seeds from Nevil Schoenmakers and The Seed Bank to maintain control over the breeding direction of the Northern Lights project. What you’re getting is a direct descendant of those original Afghan broadleaf genetics—not a reconstruction, but a genuine continuation.
In 2020, Seattle Greg provided me with the original seed stock—stored in a Seattle freezer since the early 1980s and recovered by his family in 2019. I successfully germinated and reproduced them in my greenhouse.
The Line: Purest Indica (Steve Murphy Afghan)
This line represents a pure Afghan expression—compact, broadleaf dominant, and visually similar to classic hash plant structures. Plants grow with dense branching, long, draping leaflets, and a distinct Christmas-tree shape. Buds are large, sticky, and leafy, with a strong preference for low humidity. Aromas lean toward burnt rubber, skunk, and acrid earth, making it a standout in any garden.
